Welcome to Moule !

Tourism

On the territory of Moule, the lodging capacity is of about 1,500 beds. The major tourist centers are the coastal area with several hotel complexes and the city of Moule. But lodging in "gîtes" or B&B on the countryside becomes more and more popular with the actual trend to "ecotourism".

Various outdoor sporting activities can be done (surf, kayak), by beginners and experienced sportsmen and women.

The beach of "l'Autre Bord", at a 5 minutes distance from the city center, offers kilometers of white sand and a breathtaking view to the northerly coast of Grande-Terre.

In the ethnographical museum Edgar Clerc you can discover pre-columbian civilizations - Arawaks and Caribs -, who used to live in Guadeloupe from about 500 before JC until the 15th century, when they were exterminated by the arriving colonialists. A collection of pottery works and tools, result of about 20 years of digs undertaken by Edgar Clerc especially on the site of Morel, enlarged by gifts, deposits or acquisitions, let you reconstitute this part of the history of Guadeloupe. Other rooms show collections of local fauna and flora species.

maison coloniale zevallos Another point of interest is the colonial manor of Zévallos, a beautiful planter's house built in the beginning of the 19th century all of wood and wrought iron - the pure "Eiffel" style.

The maison du crabe (house of crabs) in Duteau exhibits the different varieties of Guadeloupean crabs and you can taste delicious crab dishes in its restaurant (colombo, matété…)

Food Industry

The industrial activity in the area of Moule has its roots far back in the past, thus is principally related to sugar cane processing.

The last sugar refinery of continental Guadeloupe is located on the territory of the municipality: the plant Gardel, founded in 1870.

The distillery Damoiseau, the most important producer of rum, also is established in this region, supplied with cane by the farmers living nearby. The production comprises white rum, vintage rum and Punch.

A slaughterhouse, with the latest equipments, has been built and will be inaugurated soon.

Agriculture

sugar cane field In the past, essentially sugar cane was farmed in this area, and it still remains the most important farming product. Today the farmers tend to diversify by introducing melon farming, for example, for the local and international markets.

Breeding is not done at industrial extent, but remains an important activity for the farmers. Nearly all of them have their own cattle and goat livestock.
